Ruminations - on a Sad Song ep. 1

Ruminations - on a Sad Song ep. 1 What is it about a sad song? Some of us only like them when we ourselves are feeling blue, others might seek them out regardless of their current mood. What makes a song really sad, and what factors contribute to getting that feeling across to the audience? We start our mini-series using Tom Reynolds 2005 book “I Hate Myself and Want to Die” as inspiration, guide-post, and subject of review. We start with Mr. Reynolds first chapter: I was a Teenage Car Crash. Please note that none of this is meant to take the serious nature of a sad song lightly. When first picking up the book, I expected a deeper dive into what made a sad song, what motivated the author of each track, maybe biographical info that gave us insight into the artist that was moved to pen their heartbreak, and set it to music. Like many times in life, we find the laughs to make it through the pain… The episode starts with a harrowing tale of Mike and an alley fire… Finding the solace in a sad song is a beautiful human experience, through the music, lyrics, or the brilliant combination of both. Hope you find comfort in some of this, be it from the artists works, or in the simple knowledge that someone has felt what you are feeling, and none of us are in this alone.
